MATRIX is a body of work that makes space for still life oil paintings in a digital and fast paced world, while reflecting how society behaves in these cyber landscapes. In a time where we all claim our “15 minutes of fame”, each painting plays their hand in the game by acting as its own world. Through referencing pop culture, consumerism, and product placement, MATRIX cherry picks the best our culture has to offer while making a commentary on the way we consume media and the need to curate and perfect our online lives. Using motifs of grids, spatial awareness, and unique perspective changes, each painting emulates a faux cyber landscape.
The process of making each painting follows the same three step blueprint: the creation of a sculptural tableau, photographic documentation, and lastly a painting practice. Each object is carefully sculpted and curated and then digitally documented through photography- paralleling the instantaneous nature of our culture. The piece is then completely deconstructed and reconstructed into a painting that holds as its own,  adding an intentional slowness and deliberation standing in contrast to the quick and immediate nature of media consumption, forcing the viewer to take their time in examining the work. The use of surrealism and character building also add depth and nuance to the paintings, exposing the facades that people present to the world and the idiosyncrasies that lie beneath the surface. MATRIX offers a unique perspective on the intersection of art, media, and society.
